  • Stainless Grade 17-7 is a precipitation hardening stainless steel that provides high strength and hardness, excellent fatigue properties, good corrosion resistance, good formability, and minimum distortion upon heat treatment. The alloy provides valuable property combinations particularly well suited for aerospace applications. This special alloy also provides benefits for other applications requiring high strength and good corrosion resistance, as well as excellent properties for flat springs at temperatures up to 600°F (316°C).

APPLICATIONS OF 17-7 STAINLESS STEEL SHEET/PLATE

    • applications requiring good strength, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties up to 800 F in service.
    • used for very detailed, intricate parts due to its low distortion in heat treatment.
    • commonly found in a variety of springs and washers.
  • ADDITIONAL PROPERTIES OF 17-7 STAINLESS STEEL SHEET/PLATE

    • Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion resistance of Type 17-7PH stainless steel in all heat treated conditions, like other types of stainless steels – will develop superficial rust in some environments. For example, in a marine atmosphere, stainless steels show evidence of rusting after relatively short exposure periods. However, after exposure of one or two years, the amount of rust present is little more than that present at six months. As with all martensitic steels, 17-7PH stainless steel may be subject to cracking when exposed under stress in environments containing hydrogen sulfide. Such applications are not recommended.
    • Formability
In Condition A, the alloy can be formed comparably to Type 301. It work hardens rapidly and may require intermediate annealing in deep drawing or in forming intricate parts. Springback is similar to that of Type 301. This alloy is extremely hard and strong in Condition C. Therefore, fabrication techniques for such material must be used.
    • Weldability
The precipitation hardening class of stainless steel is generally considered to be weldable by the common fusion and resistance techniques. Special consideration is required to achieve optimum mechanical properties by considering the best heat-treated conditions in which to weld and which heat treatments should follow welding. This particular alloy is generally considered to have poorer weldability compared to the most common alloy of this stainless class, 17-4 PH stainless steel. A major difference is the high Al content of this alloy, which degrades penetration and enhances weld slag formation during arc welding. Also, the austenite conditioning and precipitation hardening heat treatments are both required after welding to achieve high strength levels. When a weld filler is needed, 17-7 PH is most often specified.
  • SURFACE FINISH OF 17-7 STAINLESS STEEL SHEET/PLATE :
*Not all finishes are available in all alloys - (contact Yieh United Sales for more information)

#1 Finish Hot rolled, annealed and pickled.
#2D Finish A uniform, dull silver gray mill finish that is applied to thinner stainless steel coils, the thickness of which has been reduced by cold rolling.
#2B Finish A semi polished surface achieved by finishing with the equivalent of a 80 to 120 grit abrasive. This finish has a pronounced grit line.
#3 Finish A semi polished surface achieved by finishing with the equivalent of a 80 to 120 grit abrasive. This finish has a pronounced grit line.
#4 Finish Also called brushed, directional or satin finish. A is characterized by fine polishing grit lines that are uniform and directional in appearance. The final abrasive used in the process is 150 to 220 grit.
#4 Satin Brush Finish 150 to 180 grit finish A fine directional polish, typically used in the washroom accessories industry. Most 3.5″ floppy diskette cover plates have this finish.
#6 Finish Polished finish achieved with the equivalent of a 240 grit abrasive. Finer grit lines and higher reflectivity than a No. 4 finish.
#7 Finish Highly reflective surface obtained with the equivalent of a 320 grit abrasive. Minimal grit lines.
No. 8 or True #8 mirror This is the most reflective mirror finish on the market. All of the polishing, or “grit,” lines from the preliminary polishing operations are removed. The look is that of a glass mirror. Sometimes referred to as a non directional mirror finish, Super 8, No. 9, Perfect No. 10, and even No. 12 mirror.
CMP Super #8 mirror Chemical Mechanical Polished Super #8 mirror finished sheets are guaranteed to be free from any manufacturing defects. This product represents the ultimate in mirror polished stainless steel. It is available as a single-sided or double-sided mirror polished sheet.
Hairline finish 80 – 140 grit finish A well defined directional polish. Starting base substrate is a No. 4 finish sheet; these sheets are polished to provide a “continuous long grain” hairline look. A finish which is popular with architects for its aesthetic, it is equally popular with fabricators due to it’s ease of fabrication and finish matching properties after welding operations.
